FAQs & How-Tos

How to stream music with your Apple device
Our new JBL Link Music and Link Portable both support Apple AirPlay 2. Pick up your Apple device, use your favorite music streaming service, and connect to the JBL speaker! Please note: before using Apple AirPlay 2, you will need to install it on your WiFi network, either using the Google Home app or Apple Home app ( your choice! ).
When trying to set up my speaker with the Google Home app, I get a message that says “Device needs to be activated before setup”. How do I proceed?
If you see this message, you must download the Device Utility app from the Google Play Store. Follow the instructions in the app to activate your speaker, and then return to the Google Home app to complete the setup.

Can the speaker be used with Bluetooth without setting up Voice Assistant?
JBL Playlist: Yes, it can be used with Bluetooth out of the box, and also Chromecast (setup is done via Google Home, but speaker does not have Google Assistant built-in) JBL Link Bar: Yes, it can be used with Bluetooth and Chromecast after setting the bar up with a Google account - choosing not to activate the Google Assistant. JBL Link Music: No, this speaker requires setup via Google Home JBL Link Portable: No, this speaker requires setup via Google Home JBL Link 10, 20 and Link View: No, these speakers requires setup via Google Home Harman Kardon Citation series: No, this speaker requires setup via Google Home Harman Kardon Allure: Yes, Bluetooth is available from factory settings. Every time it is powered on and off, the speaker will say "Now in setup mode, follow the instructions in the Harman Kardon Alexa App." Harman Kardon Allure Portable: Yes, Bluetooth will be available after initial setup in the Harman Kardon Alexa App. This means that you have to log in with your Amazon account at first, and if you do not want to use the Alexa assistant, log out of you Amazon account afterwards. Harman Kardon Astra: Yes, Bluetooth will be available after initial setup in the Harman Kardon Alexa App. This means that you have to log in with your Amazon account at first, and if you do not want to use the Alexa assistant, log out of you Amazon account afterwards.
I have connected my speaker using the Device Utility app, but the Google Home app cannot find the speaker. What should I do?
Close and restart the Google Home app, or restart your phone. Start the Google Home app again, and the speaker should now appear.

When using the Device Utility app to set up my speaker, my Wi-Fi network is not appearing in the list. How can I connect to my Wi-Fi network?
If the network does not appear, you can manually type in the network name (SSID) and password to connect.

Google Assistant Not Making/Taking Phone Calls

As of December 1, 2022, Google Assistant on third party smart displays, soundbars, and speakers are no longer able to make a voice call to a landline or mobile number on the carrier network. Voice-over-IP calls continue to work. This is due to the ongoing infrastructure improvements.

Buttons unresponsive when plugged into a power source
If the buttons on your portable speaker are not working properly or are unresponsive while plugged into a power source, please try running the speaker on battery. If the buttons perform correctly while running on battery, this means your power supply is not providing enough current/amps. Be sure to use a power supply that has a rating equal to or greater than the amperage rating indicated in your product specs.
I am trying to use Chromecast, but it is not working after the setup.
To use Chromecast, you must continue the setup in the Google Home app first.
Configuring the speaker only with Apple WAC will not enable the Chromecast feature.
For this to happen, you must sign-in with your Google account.

You can quickly try out the Chromecast feature, and if you do not like it, reset your Citation or LINK speaker, and redo the configuration part on your Apple device.
Smart TV Compatibility
It is always recommended to use our range of Soundbars, such as the JBL Bar series - if you want a speaker for your Television or Smart TV as they are designed specifically for this use, whereas our Portable speakers are designed primarily for use with Phones and Tablets.

Portable speakers with an Aux-in port, such as the Xtreme 3 and Boombox 3 - if connected through an Aux cable, should have less issues compared to using Bluetooth, however there can be issues with audio/video synchronization if used for this purpose.

Support for Bluetooth connectivity between a TV and speaker depends on a number of different factors such as Bluetooth & A2DP versions and Audio Codecs used by each device. This can vary based on the brand, model and age of the devices, however we cannot confirm if any specific combination of TV and speaker will work without issues such as latency or lip sync delay.
